Together with Thorn Barrier and shield you have the defences necessary to survive. It provides a very nice layer of protection without requiring you to trigger it in any way. All three weapon abilities provide a form of CC to help us slow the enemy and retreat. You can swap to healing Skills if you find yourself in a situation where you need to help other faction members. Boots and Helmet give us both movement speed and means to escape from cc or go into stealth when we get low. Intelligence provides us with extra cooldowns and boosts the weapon, because you may also need to kill some mobs while gathering. Tendril's Grasp and Venomstave are also good choices.
